Be aware of High-Altitude Illness (also known as Mountain Sickness) – a common occurrence for visitors at our altitude. If you have a heart or lung condition, talk with your doctor before traveling. He or she can advise you about your plans and may be able to prescribe medication to help prevent or alleviate symptoms.
Symptoms usually begin within 48 hours of arriving at a high altitude such as 7,000 – 8,000 feet. Salida is 7,000 feet elevation.
Symptoms include:
- headaches, shortness of breath, fatigue
- nausea or vomiting
- swelling of hands and feet, even the face
- inability to sleep at night
Help prevent or relieve symptoms:
- drink more water
- avoid alcoholic drinks which can worsen symptoms
- rest and relax your first few days – avoid strenuous activity
